Creative Writing Workshops for Children & Young Adults A Literacy Program Sponsored by Executive Women International of Detroit-Windsor
Executive Women International are a committed non-profit group of businesswomen and entrepreneurs who believe that literacy is a focus of a creative, productive, successful life. Since 2002 they have partnered with local schools to provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged students to help them achieve their highest potential. This pre-Kindergarten through fifth-grade community is comprised of low-income homes with ethnic backgrounds of 80% Hispanic, 10% Caucasian and 10% African American. To date, through their partnership, EWI has assisted over 2650 students, 300 parents and 150 volunteers with reading programs, books, and, desperately needed supplies. They touch the very lives of these children and their futures, which ripples out into their families and community.
The Creative Light Writer's Guild is an innovative month-long program fosters a love of the written word with children and their families. Our facilitators partner with schools to provide a specific curriculum that focuses on logical thinking patters and creative writing skills. We begin with ideas; convey those ideas into outlines and structure; build thoughts into story; learn about the essence of editing; engage in constructive peer review; and finally, publish a book with the students' works between it's pages.
When the stories are complete, we celebrate the children and their courageous creativity with a special event to introduce the book to family, friends, and the community just like "real" authors. Readings and autograph signings culminate in an exciting evening for the children surrounded by family, friends, coaches, teachers, parents, and fans. The home-town celebrity of these students is felt throughout the room, as together they declare, "I AM An Author!"
Each student receives one complimentary copy of the book we've produced together as a jump start in building their writing legacy. Proceeds from the sales of additional books support next year's Creative Light Writing Guild program. Books will be available for sale on the night of the Launch Event, at The Scriptorium Bookshop in Clawson, Michigan, on our website, and on Amazon.com in both print and e-book versions.
